Biographical Information

1. Education and Scientific Research: Professor Zhang is a major contributor to the development of the Agricultural Resources and Environment in China, and he fully expanded the content and research fields of plant nutrition, and greatly promoted the development of this discipline in China to converge with global plant nutrition research. Professor Zhang has supervised many talented researchers in the field of agricultural resources and environmental sciences in China, including 105 Masters, 185 PhDs, and more than 40 post-doctoral researchers, and was selected as an Excellent Teacher of Beijing in 2017. His research mainly focused on how to realize high crop yield, high nutrient use efficiency and protect environment at the same time, in order to ensure food security and realize sustainable development in China. In last more than 30 years, he developed a series of integrated crop and nutrient management technologies to increase crop yield and improve nutrient use efficiency, while reducing environmental footprint significantly. Through the vast network and governmental actions, the great changes have been made for transformation of agriculture from sole high input and output to high yield, high efficiency and environmental sound. Till now, Professor Zhang has published 558 papers in international journals, including Nature and Science (6 papers), and PNAS (4 papers). The total number of Google Scholar citations of his papers is 46,787 till date (H-index = 93, Web of Science). He was awarded the second prizes of the National Natural Science Award, and National Science and Technology Progress Award. He was selected as a Clarivate Analytics “Global Highly Cited Scientist” during 2017-2019.

2. Social Services: Professor Zhang created the Science and Technology Backyard” (STB) model, providing technical service with the “four zero” principle, i.e. zero distance, zero-time difference, zero threshold, and zero cost”. More than 200 sets of training lectures and teaching modules have been compiled, and more than 100,000 farmers have been trained in the STBs. The STBs have built a network platform of experts, government officials, and enterprises across the whole country. The crop yield and income of farmers has been increased greatly due to this training program. Professor Zhang and his team have helped farmers achieve remarkable economic, environmental and societal benefits, and made outstanding contributions to the green transformation of agriculture. In 2016, he won the first prize in the Top Ten Models of Innovation in China's Three Rurals” (Three Rurals mean Agriculture, Rural Areas and Farmers). International small farmer research expert Professor Ken Giller pointed out that the Science and Technology Backyard” model is an innovative model in rural areas that helps smallholder farmers increase production and efficiency, and is the most successful classical case in the world”.

3. International Networking: Professor Zhang has made outstanding contributions to international cooperation. He led the comprehensive cooperation carried out with Germany, the Netherlands, the United States, the United Kingdom, and motivated an Asian Nutrient Management Collaboration Network and a Global Agriculture Green Development Collaboration Network. He has been in charge of the Sino-German Agricultural Research Cooperation for 22 years, and inaugurated the Sino-Dutch agricultural cooperation based on cultivation of first-class talents, encouragement of interdisciplinary research and integration of industry, education and research. He participated in the formulation of the United Nations Nutrient Management Plan for 2020 and the Global Agricultural Sustainable Development Plan and was selected as an Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences (2014). He has served successively as Chair of the International Plant Nutrition Colloquium and been a member of the United Nations Global Nutrient Management Collaboration Committee as well as the Chair of the Asia Pacific Region of the committee.

4. Contributions to Africa: He has been working hard to promote scientific research cooperation between China and African countries. In 2015, Professor Zhang was invited by the Agriculture and Food Security Center/Africa of Columbia University to visit Africa and discussed the sustainable development of agricultural intensification and implementation paths, visited field agricultural production and production facilities in Kenya, and conducted field guidance during his visiting to the related field experiments, including  1) The Millennium Village Project in Yala, 2) IITA/Earth Institute NSF BREAD trials, 3) IPNI - long term limiting nutrient trials in Sidindi, 4) IFAD/WeRate germplasm and nutrient Trials in Vihiga, 5) N2 Africa/WeRATE Soybean and nutrient trials, and 6) Cornell University, Healthy bean trials, Kakamega.

In 2019, Professor Zhang organized and chaired the International Workshop on Agriculture Green Development, and set up a special session on Africa. Professor Zhang discussed the agriculture green development in Africa with Professor Felix Dapare Dakora, who is the President of the Academy of Sciences in African. At the same time, he appointed Professor Felix Dapare Dakora as a distinguished professor of the National Academy of Agriculture Green Development in China Agricultural University. In 2019, Professor Zhang promoted collaborations between China Agricultural University (CAU) and the African Academy of Sciences (AAS), leading to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between both sides. He has also promoted the cooperation between the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the African Academy of Sciences (AAS).

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering (FASE), which is a journal of the Chinese Academy of Engineering organized by Professor Zhang in the field of agriculture, published a special issue on “Agriculture Green Development in Africa”, which introduces how to apply China's agriculture green development model to Africa and how to improve African agriculture to achieve the sustainable development goals. It also introduces how to promote the synchronization of “green” and “development” in Africa from the perspective of scientific research, and attract more scholars to pay attention to agricultural issues in Africa to achieve the unified goal of global agricultural sustainable development. He has also promoted the sustainable development of African agriculture.

In 2019-2020, he applied the “Science and Technology Backyard(STB) training model to the cultivation of 34 international students from eight African countries, which aims to cultivate first-class innovative and Interdisciplinary talents for agricultural science and technology in Africa. The education model has been extended in Africa through the “Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Alliance for Graduates of STB among Agricultural Universities” and “Belt and Road” training courses. This project requires that the students should understand the needs of African agricultural production and can adapt to the front line of African agricultural production. After training, these students will have the ability to apply China's advanced agricultural technologies in Africa and make innovative applications. This will serve African agriculture, rural areas and farmers on a large scale, improve livelihood conditions and standards, and promote agriculture green development and local economic development in Africa.

5. Recognition and Awards: Professor Zhang was selected as one of the first batch of National Outstanding Youth Fund (1994), Changjiang Scholar Distinguished Professor (2001), Academician of The World Academy of Sciences, Academician of International Eurasian Academy of Sciences, and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He was awarded the honorary doctorate by Wageningen University in the Netherlands and Lancaster University in the United Kingdom, and the honorary Professor by Copenhagen University in Denmark, and the adjunct Professor by the University of Western Australia in Australia. He obtained 2007 IFA International Crop Nutrition Award as well as 2014 Award for Agricultural Science from The World Academy of Science.
